Team Wichita is on the way. A frantic week of collecting donated supplies, organizing and packing is done. In the hold of the plane rests an O2 Concentrator (donated by Hart Pharmacy) surrounded by donated pillows (donated by Kip). Boxed it weighed 63 pounds and American Airlines waived the “heavy” bag fee. Susan, my nurse and traveling Team Wichita companion worked with Sherri, my main OR nurse as the stuff it, vac it , cram it packing team yesterday. A mountain of supplies has been reduced into 3 other bags. Customs and TSA will need strong arms to squeeze everything back in if they DARE to open these. Inside are the following collected from Kansas Surgery and Recovery Center and Advanced Orthopaedic Associates:
1. ~140 syringes of Lovenox 2. 20-30 Straight caths and several foley cath kits 3. Spinal anesthesia kits X 6 4. Picc line sets X 3 5. IV tubing/starter kits…oodles~50 6. O2 tubing for the concentrator 7. Esmarcs galore 8. Ace wraps galore 9. Dressing supplies – guaze, packing, lap sponges, towels 10. A drape set 11. Gowns (unsterile) 12. Razors 13. Sutures 14. Alupent nebulizer amps 15. Scalpel blades 10, 11 and 15 16. Weitlander and some other clamps 17. IV Lidocaine 18. Neosporin, Xeroform, Bacitracin, Iodine swabs 19. Several prep kits 20. Masks, gloves (sterile and unsterile), booties 21. Benadryl, Aleve, Tylenol, Levaquin, Amoxicillin (pharmacy was not comfortable with allowing me to buy narcotics to bring) 22. Plaster rolls and web roll 23. Rice and bean soup mix 24. Sunscreen and 100% Deet (more then enough for all) 25. Rulers and sharpie markers 26. Lidocaine, Marcaine ampules
All stuffed into 3 duffle bags (I knew hanging on to those military duffles would come in handy!!!). We will arrive in San Juan about 9 tonight and fly at 7 via the Dominican Republic to Port Au Prince arriving at 8:35 Sat morning. Susan and I will get to know the Port Au Prince airport very very well as we wait for the rest of the team to arrive about 11 am. Team Wichita would also like to say thank you to Bill Beasley and Biomimetics for their financial support of this endeavor. We have also downloaded the translator app to our itouches…as French is not our strongest language. Oui…oui! And for Ruth, 2 decks of cards!
